Hello. My name is Mark Hopwell. I’m a resident in Suffield, CT and I came here to personally thankyou for what was one of the most gratitude filled, spur of the moment situations I have ever been great full enough to have yet experienced. Today, while mowing some grass and approaching the road, I just happened to look to the left and saw what was the beginning of a motorcade of police vehicles slowly making way towards me. Not normally seeing this sort of activity on a sunny Saturday while mowing, I stopped in my tracks amazed by what I was seeing. Way to slow to be a chase. But slow enough for me to stop mowing and watch in curiosity. As the motorcade got closer I could see this was some sort of ride as a could see more and more bikers following all the police vehicles. Not just a motorcade but a ride with a purpose. Without hesitation my baseball cap came off and went to my heart and my left hand went up into a clinched fist. There I stood. In this moment. Not sure what was trully happening or how I ended up there in the grass in this stance on a Saturday afternoon while mowing. As the motorcade arrived to me there I was a living statue in a lawn. Greeted by beeps, waves, raised fists, hang loose signs, knods, and even a few quick chirps from a siren or two. I somehow had just stumbled into a very special moment that had so much more purpose then the lawn I was cutting. Then it hit me like a brick. I was a living lawn statue now fighting back tears as the waves and all the other signs of acknowledgement came one after another for what seemed like ten minutes. I’m sure it was much less but time just stood still and so did I. I later told my wife about the event. She laughed, and so did I. I did a random google search of what I saw on a vehicle. “Ride to Remember”. So here I am. To personally thank every single officer, emt, firefighter, first responder, veteran, active duty personnel, event planner, riders and the lost but never forgotten. Thank you for your service past or present. It was a beautiful moment that I will remember for a long long time.
With sincere gratitude,
Mark Hopwell
Mark;
I just saw your email and I was overwhelmed with it. Very nice, email. I am glad you were touched by what you saw last year. We are going again on 9/7/24. We are going from downtown Springfield to Hartford and back. We will be going through Suffield again. We are riding 500 strong this year for Officer Bobby Garten from Hartford PD who died last year on the 7th. of Sept.
If you email me at [email protected] I will send you the route and what time we will be rolling through Suffield. Spread the word and have all your family and friends experience what you did last year,
Respectfully Submitted;
Sgt. John Delaney Springfield PD (ret.)
